Molly's 4th Birthday Party- Superhero Theme

Molly turned 4 yesterday... how time flies.

For the past few weeks I have been working on her party. I really wanted her to have a party with friends this year since we just did a small party with family last year. We thought an afterschool party at a park would be perfect for a mid March day. Well....the weather decided to get a little crazy and it was freezing outside. I went back and forth on canceling/ relocating/ postponing the party but decided we wouldn't let a little cold weather hold us back. The temperature during the party was around 40 degrees but the sun was out. It felt fine in the sun but it was pretty cold in the shade. The kids kept warm running around and eating pizza and the parents kept warm with coffee!

Before Molly's party I went to her preschool to celebrate her birthday at snack time. Not all of her classmates were able to attend her party so I wanted to make sure to celebrate at school too! I love that her teacher snapped a picture of the two of us, the only picture of me from the whole day.
Her cute spiderman pillowcase dress was a birthday present from her Nana.

After school we headed over to the park for pizza, playtime, and cupcakes.

Her invitations were adorable. I purchased them on etsy and was able to download, edit, and print them myself. I did have a little trouble finding a place to print them. Office Depot/ Staples/ Kinko's couldn't because of the superhero logos.

With the weather being so cold I really wanted to keep things short and sweet.

Table clothes from Target
Banner and Pom Pom's were DIY

After playing at the park I did a quick reset of the table.

I used the characters from her invitations as cupcake toppers and just ordered plain cupcakes.

The treat bags contained a superhero Pez dispenser, some extra Pez candy, and superhero stickers. Molly really enjoyed stuffing the bags.

Lucy loved being with the big kids!

Getting a little help!

Superhero identity crisis!

Molly was so excited that both of her teachers came!

We let her open some presents later in the day at home. I am going to take her to see Beauty and the Beast this weekend so I figured a Belle dress was a must!

Such a FUN day!

Weekend Fun

On Friday we had a pretty low key day around the house. Both girls are not feeling great so we just played at home. I made my favorite arugula salad for dinner with grilled flank steak. YUM! I think I was asleep by 10pm....crazy party animal.
Saturday Molly and I went Aldi shopping. She loves going to Aldi with me because she knows I will always buy her things. Today she wanted a cantaloupe. I don't eat cantaloupe and have honestly never even bought one. She helped me pick one out and held it for the rest of the shopping trip, the whole car ride home, and for about 30 minutes once we got home. She has insisted on having a little with each meal.

Saturday night Dan and I went to a wedding for one of his co-workers. It was fun to get away from the kids for the night and miss the dinner/bath/  bedtime chaos! We were home by 10pm which was prefect since we were loosing an hour of sleep anyways!

The temperatures have been all over the place and there was a small chance of some snow north of us on Sunday. We really just expected a cold rainy day. I woke up around 7am Sunday to rain and then it all of the sudden turned to the most beautiful show. The flakes were huge and I was so excited for Molly to wake up and see it. It stuck around for a few hours but was all melted by 3pm. I am glad Molly got to enjoy it for a little bit. The last real snow we had was 3 years ago and she was too little to remember.

Note to self: Get her some waterproof pants just in case! We had to go inside after this!

Sunday was also my birthday. Honestly, it was just like any other day of the week. We did have a small celebration at Dan's parents house with dinner of my choice, cake, and presents. We celebrated Molly's birthday as well. I was really surprised when I opened by last present and I think I let out a squeal of delight. You know you are getting older when a new vacuum really excites you. I had mentioned it to Dan but said it wasn't necessary and that it was pretty expensive. His birthday is next week so he told his parents it could be his birthday present too! SOOOOOOO excited to get that bad boy charged and running. Let's see how it handles a shedding dog and 2 toddlers who seem to leave a trail! I also got these amazing wine glasses. We spend a lot of time outside and my Reidel glasses are just asking to get broken.
These are shatterproof and dishwasher safe and have a little spot for your thumb!

Five On Friday

One-
Last weekend my sister and her family were in town. We took the big girls to the marionette theater to see "The Wizard of Oz". The play was adorable and the girls sat mostly still for the whole show. We love going to the marionette theater. The tickets are only $5 and the shows are so adorable, each with a little twist on the original version. The shows are 45 minutes to an hour, the perfect length for the young crowd.
These two love each other so much!

Two-
Everything is starting to bloom in our yard. The elephant ears are popping up, the butterfly bushes are getting green, and the knockout roses are starting to bloom. Last year my goal was to work on creating a yard that was all perennials, something I could just prune and fertilize and not have to replant yearly. I love my knockout roses and bought 4 more this week to plant in the backyard. I was driving by Lowe's (on the way to the grocery store) and saw a few clearance racks of flowers and couldn't not go look. I grabbed 4 one gallon single knockout red roses for $5 each, regularly $15. A little good soil, water, and fertilizer always does the trick on the clearance flowers.

Three-
Does anyone else make their little girl wear bike shorts under their dresses? I am not a ultra conservative person but I just feel better having Molly wear shorts under all of her dresses. She is pretty tall so dresses tend to be on the shorter side so the shorts just make sense. Her 3t shorts are getting pretty small and I hadn't been able to find any shorts in store that would fit. I ordered some for her from Old Navy yesterday that will hopefully be nice and fit well. I ordered her a 5t so hopefully she can wear them through next year.

Four-
Yesterday Dan got into a car accident on is way to work. Someone pulled out of a gas station right into his passengers side. He was fine and took the rest of the day off to just relax. Every panel on the passenger side of his car needs to be replaced. It looks like Wolverine attacked his car. He was hit by a box truck that somehow ripped holes all over the car. Neither of the doors will open and the windows wont function either. I am glad he was safe and unharmed...cars can be fixed!

Five-
Molly has had a pretty bad cough this week. I kept her home from school on Wednesday but she seemed better yesterday so I went ahead and sent her. Last night we sat down for dinner and she started crying that her ear hurt. She's NEVER made this complaint before so I grabbed the phone to see if I could get her an after hours appointment that night. They had a 7:30pm appointment available so we quickly ate, had a quick bath, put Lucy to bed and rushed Molly to the doctor. She did have an ear infection, only her 2nd ever. We grabbed her antibiotics from CVS and she was home and in bed at 8:30. SOOOOOOO thankful for after hours appointments. They had them through the winter but extended them a few weeks due to the flu outbreak going on recently.

Yesterday was a long day! Here's to a much better weekend! 🍻

Molly's Big Girl Room

If I had to pick one room in my house to be a favorite it would easily be Molly's big girl room. When we moved into our house Molly was 15 months old we moved her into the smaller "kids" room which was perfect for her crib, chair, and dresser. Once Molly turned 2 I began working on her big girl room, the other "kids" room across the hall. These two bedrooms share a jack and jill bathroom. The room we use as a nursery is a good size and the other bedroom is huge. Molly could easily have a king size bed with room to spare. If the girls ever wanted to share Molly's room there would be plenty of room for 2 beds!

As far as transitioning her from crib to bed... She slept in her crib with a pillow and comforter for a few months to teach her to sleep with her head on the pillow. She loved her crib and never climbed out. We would talk about a big girl bed and she would cry that she loved her crib. I was 6 months pregnant when we made the transition, so we needed the crib for baby sister. One morning she got up and while playing in the playroom the crib just disappeared. I took it apart and put it in the nursery closet. She was moving to a new room but needed to not see the crib for a while. For nap she went in her new bed and did just fine. She didn't realize she could get out of bed on her own for months. At 4 years old she still calls for me to come get her after nap and in the morning.

It was fun creating a whole new room for Molly. We had the queen size bed and that was about it. Luckily my grandmother was downsizing to a retirement community and I called dibs on the dresser and mirror. They are solid wood Drexel pieces that had been painted white. I gave them a coat of creamy white paint and used a little furniture wax to finish them off. I took off the hardware and scrubbed it with Bar Keepers Friend and it went from black to a beautiful bronze.

A few months later my aunt realized she had the side table that went with the set. I REALLY wanted 2 side tables and wanted them matching so I jumped online to see what I could find. Craigslist didn't turn up anything nearby so I posted a picture of the table on a few for sale groups on Facebook and within a few hours I had found a match. It was in rough shape and I way overpaid for it ($50) but considering everything else was free I consider it a win. I changed out that hardware on the side tables with glass knobs from Hobby Lobby. I love that the open area on the table are a perfect spot for storing her smaller books.

The headboard was picked up at a local thrift store and painted turquoise to add a pop of color. I had to use some 2x4's to raise the headboard so it could be seen behind the thick mattresses.

The butterfly mobile is from her nursery. She has asked me to take it down but I refuse to!
We have very few toys in her room but she does have her Glitter Glider Castle in the corner with a basket for all of the dolls. She became obsessed with these Magiclip dolls after seeing them on a youtube and asked for them for Christmas 2 years ago. Little did we know they were the "IT" item that year and we had one heck of a time tracking them down. I became a crazy woman and made sure she had EVERY SINGLE DOLL, even buying some on ebay.
She does still enjoy them a year + later.

The "Okay to Wake" clock has been a lifesaver the past few months. She started waking in the middle of the night and telling me "I'm all done with my nap" so at 3am I ordered the clock to regain a little sanity! The clock and sound machine travel with us everywhere we go!

For a little fun I painted her dresser drawers the same color as her headboard.

She comes up with very creative ideas for what the handles look like.

The vanity was a Hanukkah present from her great grandparents. She has just now started to enjoy playing at it. She keeps some play jewelry and hair things in the baskets as well as pretend makeup. She's getting a little jewelry box for her birthday.

I purchased the wooden monogram from a local company and spray painted it myself.

The Teepee is a new addition. I purchased it while planning her room but was concerned she would want to sleep in it and not her bed so we had a chair in its place until recently. We told her she could have the teepee in her room when she got rid of her pull-ups. She recently ditched them for good so the teepee came in a the chair went into the guest room! She wants a fuzzy rug for inside but I haven't found a small one for a decent price yet. I wish we had an Ikea in town!
The "Good Night" and "Sleep Tight" wooden signs are from Hobby Lobby. I love the touch of gold that it adds. After hanging these I spray painted the curtain rod and clips gold to match.

The newest addition is this wire shelf for Target. She loves the Marvel Tsum Tsum mystery packs so we loaded up on them as prizes for good behavior and potty rewards. They collected on the living room mantle for a few months until I got tired of looking at them. I have a little piece of cardstock on the bottom so the little characters have a flat surface to sit on. The shelf is also a great place for her little trinket boxes that I don't want her playing with.

Gotta love the princess castle on one side of the room and the superhero's and dinosaurs on the other!

We keep larger books in the basket next to her teepee and an extra blanket in the ottoman. She uses that to help get up into bed. We did start with rails on both side of the bed but removed them once we felt comfortable with her sleeping habits.

The Best Banana Bread

Neither of my kids like bananas. When Molly was a baby and young toddler she would eat her "nana" but now she wont go near it. Lucy has spit them out from Day 1! I have bought bananas many times to try them out again and they always end up not eaten and made into banana bread. For a long time I couldn't find a good recipe. Some were too dry, some never seemed to cook evenly and ended up raw in the middle, and other required 1,600 bowls with sifted dry ingredients slowly poured into the wet mixture and gently folded in. Who has time for that???

I finally found a good recipe after about 10 batches of mushy, flavorless bread ended up in the garbage. I usually double this recipe and make a loaf to eat and a loaf to freeze. We always add a handful of mini chocolate chips and and a handful of craisins to ours to make it extra delicious.

I mix everything with my Kitchenaid mixer and the only other bowl required in for melting the butter. I use the butter bowl later for beating the eggs. Only 2 bowls to clean!  I set my timer for 1 hour but it usually takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to cook through.

Smash bananas in mixer.

Mix in melted butter, then sugar, beaten egg and vanilla.

Add flour. I add it all at once and don't worry about sifting.  Also add pinch of salt and baking soda.
Mix well.

Add in extras, if you wish. We love adding mini semi sweet chocolate chips and craisins and sometimes add walnuts.  Mix just until everything is incorporated well.

Pour into greased bread pan. I double the recipe to make an extra!

These bread pans are well loved. They belonged to my husbands grandmother and I love that they look extremely used! I could easily go buy new pans for a few dollars but I won't!

Bake for 1 hour at 350 and then test the center to make sure they are cooked all the way through. Mine usually take 10-15 minutes extra!

To freeze my extra loaf I wrap it in plastic wrap, then foil, then place in a freezer bag. To thaw I just set it on the counter the night before we want to eat it.

My kids love this for breakfast. We cut a slice and pop it in the microwave for 15 seconds to warm it up and make the chocolate a little gooey.
Perfection!

  • 2 to 3 very ripe bananas, peeled
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour

  • 1 Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C), and butter a 4x8-inch loaf pan.
2 In a mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork until completely smooth. Stir the melted butter into the mashed bananas.
3 Mix in the baking soda and salt. Stir in the sugar, beaten egg, and vanilla extract. Mix in the flour.
4 Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan. Bake for 50 minutes to 1 hour at 350°F (175°C), or until a tester inserted into the center comes out clean.
5 Remove from oven and cool completely on a rack. Remove the banana bread from the pan. Slice and serve. (A bread knife helps to make slices that aren't crumbly.)

    Five on Friday!

    One
Molly received some seeds and instructions to grow parsley with her latest PJ library book. For 3 weeks we have been watering the seeds and placing them in the sun. Its so fun to see them finally sprout. She loves checking for new sprouts and watering them each morning. Next week we will move them to a larger pot and hopefully keep them alive.

PJ library is a non-profit literacy program for Jewish children 6 months to 8 years old. We have been receiving books since Molly was 1 and we love them. If you are Jewish and your kids are not signed up for PJ library you should check it out!

    Two
We finally said goodbye to our Jake and the Neverland Pirates wall decals. Molly loved them but she has grown to like different things now. My brother in law worked for FatHead and sent her these a few years ago. Since they are reusable we have passed them on to a little boy who is very excited for them to decorate his room.
While I am not really into character decor both girls really liked these and I had them on the back wall so you could only see them once you actually entered the playroom! Don't worry...new decals are coming in a few weeks... 😂

    Three
Last week I ordered some new shelves and tool storage wall unit for the garage. I got everything installed this week and it seems so much neater. I still need to fill up the tool storage but everything is neatly organized. When we moved in 2.5 years ago we really just threw everything on some 20 year old particle board book shelves. They were honestly being held together by the backing. I was fun the Chip Gaines 'demo' them with a good karate kick!

    Four
We were excited to welcome March and say goodbye to February. We broke out some spring dresses this week, told the groundhog he was wrong, and then turned the heat back on to welcome a cooler weekend. The weather needs to make up its mind!

    Five
I think I have a slight obsession with these 99cent air fresheners. I hate for our house to not smell nice. We have a dog and a kid in diapers and the last thing I want is for my house to smell like either of those. These Renuzit Pure White Pear and Lavender air fresheners smell so good I cannot stop buying them. I have one in each of the girls rooms and in the man room, where the dog hangs out, but I think we need them all over! I find myself grabbing 3-4 every time I find a store that carries them.

The easiest magnet board you could ever DIY!

While trying to think of fun and educational toys to help fill and decorate our playroom I decided we needed a magnet board. I had a huge bag of letter and number magnets from my teaching days and thought it would be a fun way to work on early reading and spelling skills.

To make things SUPER easy I went to Lowes first to get the piece of sheet metal. I didn't want to have to cut anything so I decided to buy the metal first and then the frame. I found a 24' x 36' piece for $9.99 and one for $19.88. For this project I decided on the more expensive, thicker piece. The less expensive piece would have probably worked just fine though!

Once I got it home I checked under the guest bed to see what kind of unused large frames we had. I refuse to throw away frames so I just keep them hidden under beds! I happened to have one just the right size. I didnt need the glass so I just set that aside. I laughed for a few minutes after taking it apart and seeing what was inside...

    Husbands college bedroom art!

If you need to purchase a frame I would run into goodwill or another thrift store first! Poster size frames are pretty easy to find, especially since you don't need the glass!

Now simply insert the sheet metal and put the backing on! I used some heavy duty hanging wire and also command strips to secure it to the wall. The wire hangs on a heavy
duty drywall anchor screws. These wall anchors are really easy to use and are super strong. I feel the need to always have a good supply of command strips on hand because they are so useful! Don't buy the 4 pack, buy the value pack!

The command strips on the bottom secure it flat to the wall so little hands don't mess with it.

    We love these animal magnets.

Next I would love to get these gear magnets and some new letters. The plastic letters I had from teaching don't stick extremely well and half end up on the floor.

We normally put the magnets up high, otherwise this one likes to come clear them off!
